Om Malik posted his October traffic numbers and boy are they impressive.
1.29 million unique sessions. 4.6 million page views. 51% of page views were via RSS. He says it was his best month ever. I’m betting November tops it.
Doing some quick back of the envelope math it seems to me that Om could easily generate $10-15k per month in advertising, and possibly much more.
Discounting RSS, Om had 2.25 million page views in October (Om doesn’t put ads into RSS). If his ads generate a combined $4 CPM he’s nearly hit $10k. If its more like $8, he’s at $20k.
I’m making some big assumptions on CPM, but given how targeted and attractive his audience is, I’d imagine this is quite doable with 3-4 ads being served on a page, which is what he’s doing now.
except for people like me who has NEVER clicked on an ad, even when I saw them way back when before Adblock & Firefox lol
Mike, I am very skeptical about advertising thru RSS => Ars Technia has started using it - I think i am going to unsubscribe. I have having difficulty reading the contect on my reader (using bloglines). Its all about content.
I feel people will realise that - writing a long article - makes the reader come to your website. And then over there you can have ads - very relevant ones. Which can give you money.
But using ads in podacast - is pretty good. As the listener - has to listen to it! esp if your content is really good! As anyway - if the podcast content is not good - people stop subscribing
