The only "cloud storage" around is the one obscuring Bill's thinking. The longer Microsoft stays in denial, the harder it will be for them to catch up - maybe never.

Software as a service is here to stay, and with bandwidth becoming a commodity, there are a lot of reasons why an online application works better. My storage cloud could be as simple as a UBS drive. Why do I need Microsoft for that? Furthermore, the word processing functionality part is largely becoming an insignificant commodity.

Interesting how Microsoft came along to replace Wang (over time and by eliminating other PC software competitors) with the next generation word processor. Apparently the same thing will happen to Microsoft as the fat PC becomes as irrelevant as the minicomputer.

[...] I attended Mix ‘06 this week and had a pretty damn good time, too. Dave Winer says that the conference didn’t make much of an impression in the blogosphere, and that Microsoft only “went with safe bloggers” at the event. I’m not sure what this means because anyone could attend, and I assume Dave was even offered a free pass. So Dave, why didn’t you just go? You could have taught us softies a lesson in real blogging. [...]

[...] Will things like AjaxWrite have an impact on Microsoft’s Office revenues over time? Yeah, it must. Even so, Bill Gates says that he just doesn’t understand our infatuation with thin client versions of Word. That may be true, but at some point I expect Microsoft to come out with ad supported versions of their own clients…they’ll just wait, of course, until they have to. And Google has pushed the envelope with its recent acquisition of Writely. [...]
