I knew I shouldn’t have gotten involved when JupiterMedia’s Alan Meckler decided to rip into Om Malik, but I did. I opened my big fat mouth and now Alan’s decided to call me out.
Alan – I apologize. I wasn’t the one to compare TechCrunch to Internet.com, Om did. I don’t know if I’m bigger or smaller than your Internet.com site because I don’t read it and don’t consider it a competitor. Trust me, I have plenty of drama in my life and I’d just like to stay quiet and write about startups, which is my passion.
But to answer your questions, TechCrunch had a little over 3.5 million page views last month. For advertisers, we publicly say 3 million. Again I don’t know, or care, whether that’s bigger or smaller than your Internet.com site.
Because it’s already extinct.

Woohoo – tell it like it is!
At one time I received 8 or 9 email newsletters from internet.com. About a year and a half ago, I stopped reading them. They were days, sometimes weeks behind the curve. Worse, they had become “big” promoters: talking and reporting about sites with hundreds of thousands or millions of visitors a month. I signed up for information I could use. I don’t have a tech or advertising budget.
Oh, by the way, I am still receiving 2 or 3 email newsletters from internet.com as of today…but not as of tomorrow.
I thought you were being all nice and soothing there for most of the post, but at the end (as we say on the Internet) WHAM! COCK UP THE ASS!
Paul, I didn’t know that is how they say it on the Internet. Interesting turn of phrase.
Alexa supports your argument, dunno how reliable that is…

Liam – I don’t know either, but it doesn’t really matter to me.
maybe i’m incredibly naive, but what is with all these personal issues among tech people recently? it seems as if the web 2.0 community is turning into a playground, and not in the good sense.
Whoa! Meckler is such a jerk.
Best… Post…. Ever!
Here’s the Alexaholic comparison:
Techcrunch beats all of Mecklers top properties including internet.com
Om’s blog even bests Mecklers sites (with the exception of internet.com)

PWNED!
Mike –Hats off to you !! I did the same compare that Liam did above last nite when I noticed that Alan had called you in.
now, we have to wait for Alan to pull out his foot from his mouth and apologies.. or is that too much to ask ??

Woah…. that last line was a killer… I have to agree with Paul.
Webmasters should be VERY wary of using Alexa as a comparison tool for new sites vs. estabilished sites. Alexa is highly skewed towards webmasters and tech users. 1 in 5000 regular visitors have it installed, 1 in 50 have it installed on tech sites.
Recently I have been using Websearch.com, which shows results based on the toolbar that is downloaded when users click on those ubiquitous “free smilies” web ads. 13% of all web traffic has this installed.
This graph shows that (as expected) Internet.com has a MUCH wider readership than techcrunch.

Running these comparisons on recent products highlighted on Techcrunch will show a more sobering analysis.
Meh. I don’t think you guys are analyzing the data very well. Instead of the 6-month view, look at the 1-year view:

I’ve never heard of crunchnotes, I’m just here for the controversy. Clearly, the author of this site is trolling folks to spike up traffic and get more ad revenue. I’m hooked by smug statements like, “we say to advertisers 3 million,” when the actual stats involved include just the last 30 days.
Are there other controversies posted here, which have helped aggregate traffic at this site?
Or is this site simply more focused and useful to the Web 2.0 community?
