TechCrunch Feed Reader Breakdown
by Mike on June 28, 2006

Someone emailed me last night asking for the feed reader breakdown for TechCrunch. I’ve included a feedburner screenshot below with the numbers.

Firefox (including Flock) accounts for 20% of feed readers. Bloglines is in second place with 13%, followed by NewsGator at 12%, Rojo at 8%, FeedReader at 7%, and Netvibes at 7%. Other notables include Pageflakes, Pluck and Attensa. If you add NetNewsWire to the core NewsGator stats, NewsGator is actually bigger than bloglines.

What’s most interesting to me is that “other” accounts for 33% of readers. This is an incredibly fragmented market.

On a related note, NewsGator CTO Greg Reinacker has posted the NewsGator product roadmap. See TechCrunch for details.

I personally find it quicker and easier to use live bookmarks then load a feed reader.

I wouldn’t be surprised if mainstream audiences agree (assuming RSS makes it there).

I use Sage firefox extension.. works well for me…

My numbers are obviously not even in the same ballpark as yours, but the percentages are interesting:

- Bloglines is 28%, significantly higher share than yours - and that’s on the decline, it used to be more than 50%

- The “other” bucket is huge, 44%.

Being in the “Other” block and being proud of it ;) It’s still for me always suprising to see so many people use the livebookmarks, a feature I’m perhaps to stupid to see its usefulness :S

@mitch: Are you using the sidebar in Firefox to display the livebookmarks?

zeroK:

Nope. I’ll create a folder (”podcasts”, “tech”, etc…) on firefox’s bookmark toolbar and put all the relative feeds inside it. When I want to see what’s new, I get a menu of my feeds and then a submenu for each of the items in the feed.

It’s a quick and easy way to check your subscriptions. Maybe there are great feed reading services out there, but I don’t find them necessary.

Mmm, as for me, I’ve just downloaded this RSS ticker firefox extension so that there’s this ticker scrolling below my status bar, showing me the latest feeds. It’s good stuff.

Hey Mike,

How’s the Feedburner email take-up coming along? This is how I’m subscribing to your feed.

Cheers,

c.

these stats kinda , could be skewed, as I take feeds in multiple readers…

ANyhoot, this gives excellent matrix build data for starters :)_

I can’t believe Google Reader isn’t listed!
