Well, we've received no shortage of similar emails from Apple Legal (before they farmed most of it out to third parties for $ and PR reasons) over the years; we built quite an interesting and pleasant relationship with the staff there as a result.

Ultimately, most of this stuff is BS. We often told them so, and were pioneers in striking a fence-straddling stance: if their complaint was valid or had a strong legal basis, we complied with it in a friendly and speedy manner. If it's wishful-thinking BS on their part, we laughed in their faces and told them to stop wasting out time.

Oddly enough, they seemed to give us a lot of respect and polite treatment as a result.

There's a reason that MOSR wasn't part of the "apple blogger lawsuits" of the mid-2000's.

[...] Apple has a history of using lawyers against bloggers. There was the now infamous Think Secret lawsuit, which may have had merit. But they also engage in clearly superfluous, bullying tactics as well. In August we received a letter from Apple’s lawyers demanding that we remove an embedded YouTube video showing features from OSX 10.5. We felt this was an extreme position to take - Apple could have simply requested YouTube to remove the video. And this wasn’t a trade secrets issue - they also had a very similar video up on their own website. [...]

[...] Michelle Arrington of TechCrunch has accused Apple of going after the wrong person, “If Apple wants to go after the guy that made the Windows Mobile skin that looks like the iPhone, fine. But to bully bloggers who are simply reporting on this is another matter.” Arrington speaks from personal experience. In August Apple challenged him for embedding a YouTube video link to Mac OS X 10.5. In addition, Apple’s challenge raises a question if bloggers are permitted to post screenshots of the iPhone as thousands have done without concern from Apple’s lawyers. This news comes as Cisco is suing Apple for using the iPhone name which they claim to have trademarked in 2000.” [...]
