Check out this post by Michael Eisenberg who noticed that the post game speech given by Tony Dungy (now the first black coach to win the SuperBowl), which contained multiple references to God, didn’t match up to the AP article – all references to God and religion were removed. The main quote in question (this is the AP version):
“I’m so proud of our guys,” Dungy said. “We took the hit early with Devin Hester. We talked about it; it’s going to be a storm. Sometimes you have to work for it. Our guys played so hard and I can’t tell you how proud I am of our group, our organization and our city.”
Eisenberg is asking for someone with a Tivo to check that the quote is inaccurate (he’s going on memory) – if someone has it please put the clip up on YouTube. If AP did change the quote, this story may blow up.

You sure it wasn’t a reference to the Flying Spaghetti Monster?
That’s what I recall hearing but I’m not 100% sure…
It was edited, the part that was removed was:
“we said, the Lord doesn’t always bring you directly through, sometimes you gotta work for it.”
Right after the word storm. You can see the video here:

Skip to 2 minutes in for the quote.
As a brit i find the religiousness of the states kinda scary
it was definitely edited. i noted to my gf about how much he was mentioning religion. makes sense though, the guy has been through a lot, with his son and all. if i were him, i would be pretty mad.
Here it is, and it’s very quick into it.
Sorry… Slipped…

Quotes are edited all the time to keep the most important parts. The edited sentence is insignificant and a total empty cliche. There is no story here. Move along.
Generally, if a quote is excerpted/edited, they leave in ellipsis where they’ve snipped content out. I don’t think the religious nature of the quote is the issue really. That having been said, I’m pretty sure this kind of misquoting happens all the time. The only issue is whether it was intentional or not. Intentional misquoting (for any reason) is bad news.
But then again, the AP hasn’t had a real great record with honesty lately, and Mike has his own reasons for pointing out their follies.
Sean says it best – no story, move it along. There was compression. The discussion about the Lord wasn’t relevant. The discussion about the game was. Next!
