Sean says it best - no story, move it along. There was compression. The discussion about the Lord wasn't relevant. The discussion about the game was. Next!

Generally, if a quote is excerpted/edited, they leave in ellipsis where they've snipped content out. I don't think the religious nature of the quote is the issue really. That having been said, I'm pretty sure this kind of misquoting happens all the time. The only issue is whether it was intentional or not. Intentional misquoting (for any reason) is bad news.

But then again, the AP hasn't had a real great record with honesty lately, and Mike has his own reasons for pointing out their follies.

Quotes are edited all the time to keep the most important parts. The edited sentence is insignificant and a total empty cliche. There is no story here. Move along.

it was definitely edited. i noted to my gf about how much he was mentioning religion. makes sense though, the guy has been through a lot, with his son and all. if i were him, i would be pretty mad.

[...] There are a few people out there talking about the AP’s post-Super Bowl article on the game, found here. If you watched the post-game presentation of the Lombardi trophy, you saw Tony Dungy give a heartfelt, yet quick speech congratulating his team, coaches, and the city of Indianapolis. Tony is a religious man and didn’t hold back his praise to God for many things in his life, included the chance to play in that game. [...]

It was edited, the part that was removed was:
"we said, the Lord doesn't always bring you directly through, sometimes you gotta work for it."
Right after the word storm. You can see the video here:
http://cbs.sportsline.com/video/player?id=131589s&channel=nfl
Skip to 2 minutes in for the quote.
