I Stepped Away From The Internet for 48 hours
by Mike on April 8, 2007

I didn’t really decide to do it, but I ended up staying away from the computer for the entire weekend. Lots of my blogger friends have told me to take a day off here and there, but I never really did. For almost two years I’ve worked pretty much all the time on TechCrunch content. I don’t believe I’ve ever gone a day without writing unless I was traveling.

This weekend I discovered that I can step away from the Internet for 48 hours, and everything will be just fine when I come back.

There was actually plenty of stuff to cover this weekend, but I’m sure that the Internet will survive without my opinions on that stuff. I almost wrote about the Sam Zell debacle because picking on big media is usually something I can’t resist, but Jason Calacanis pretty much nailed the story. I have nothing else to add to what he’s said.

So what did I do all weekend? A lot of walking, both days. Maybe 10 miles total. I also spent half a day in Sonoma drinking wine with a friend and hearing about some very real and very scary real-world stuff going on in his life.

Laguna also had a good weekend. She had chopped steak 3 out of her 4 meals, and did all that walking with me.

Mike, if you think 5 miles/day is a lot of walking, maybe you should consider stepping away a bit further ;-)

Tibor, yes, I’m sure yours is much bigger than mine. Thx.

After your exchange with a certain unnamed Florida VC, I was almost going to suggest you take a weekend off.

On another topic, why is it all the scams, confidence games, spams, and flim-flam outfits always seem to be from Florida?

Anyway, welcome back.

Sometimes when you are too involved in what you are doing you think that if you step away, then things will fall, because you usually check everything immediatly and like to see changes within the minutes/hours, you expect that other like the same and that make you scared.
But i had to find out that other people are different than me (yes!) and they are more patient than me. And can take it when i take some days off.

You should do this more often. Tho we were a little bit bored without any news from you in TC.

By the way, this is the day when you discover that slowly you became into a Control freak!

Hey now, two 5 mile days is a solid chunk of walking! Sounds great Mike, I couldn’t be happier for you. And Laguna.

Very glad to hear that you did this. It was long overdue. I second Marshall’s thoughts: good for both you, and Laguna.

Mike: Sorry to have offended you, if that was the case. I did not read your post well enough I guess.

Good job Michael. It really is important, even if difficult to unplug every now and then. I did it myself not too long ago and came up with some really interesting thoughts while my mind idled down:

An Unplugged Perspective

I encourage both of us, and others to do it more often.

All the best

Tom

Good for you ;D big hug for Laguna!
