I really enjoyed reading Dave McClure’s list of reasons why PR firms are often unable to meet their client’s goals. So many of them don’t understand how blogs and new media work in general, and approach us in entirely the wrong way.
It’s great advice. if you are in PR and you represent clients who want or need blog coverage, you should read it.

I think the trick is that people don’t understand that you have to cater to the demographic that you are trying to attract. If you are developing a web based product that has no barriers to entry for online use then it is almost ludicrous to focus the majority of your attention on traditional print media.
Most people are using their product spend a lot more time on Techmeme and TC than they do on the pages of the Wall Street Journal.
Understanding your demographic might be the keystone that holds the entire thing together.
thanks mike, glad you enjoyed it.
(and now i’ll be sending PR hacks your way willy-nilly

I’m a VP at a firm that gets this kind of stuff. They built a technology platform that does incredible things - video, blogs, SEO, etc, and everybody on staff is pretty well versed in new and old media. I think a lot of people understand pieces of the puzzle but few firms and clients have the full picture right now.
I think PR’s lost a lot of its sophistication, part because of the way bloggers handle them (old media would never put up with the silly crap a lot of blogs do) and part because a lot of PR people coming into the business think they’ll make $50k out of the gate and will be on the red carpet with P Diddy. Most of the firms I know have a hard time finding talent at the college grad level.
I actually find pr some of the most easiest marketing to do. It doesn’t necessarily have to take a gigantic budget as well, and can be extremely cost effective if you have gigantic creativity.
