This is pretty much how every comment stream on TechCrunch goes these days.

Comments

  1. FIRST!

    Powned!

  4. This is hilarious, thank you.

  5. DAMN.

  6. That was pure genius. Props to whoever got a whole bunch of people together to do this- I salute you.

  9. Mike,

I agree that the comments at TC have really gone off the rails since I first started reading it in Nov 2005.

The Valleywag approach is pretty good but I am sure you will never agree. I think its a bit restrictive as well.

How about a two tier approach?

Registered/Approved users comments are displayed higher with different shading than non-registered/anonymous users? The key is to also have them in the same page but just shown differently so the average user can know where to focus his/her eyes.

Over and over again, great communities have been destroyed because of the anonymity angle. But, we need to balance the openness elemtent as well. Maybe the two tiered approach will work better than the other extreme of fully registered or no comments.

I really hope you can fix this.

  10. Nik, even the dumb posts on TC are usually better than most comments on Digg, Slate and PerezHilton….

  11. The key to quality is moderation. I don’t think anonymity is mutually exclusive with good discussion. Check out these thoughts on pre-moderation from Edward Tufte.

There are fantastic comments on TechCrunch, they’re just buried, and trying to solve the problem purely through software creates the problems you see at Slashdot and Digg.

  12. [...] 4. This video is awesome. Go watch it. [...]

  14. This was so funny… thanks for this video. :D

  15. Very funny, but it would be more accurate (and true) if the meeting would have been in a busy street and not in a private office. ;)

  16. Matt,

Agree that anonymity or not does not alone guarantee quality of conversation.

I thought tufte’s points were great but a little too restrictive.

There are other great communities who have taken on a software+human approach.

May have already seen this but good essays on this include:
    Joel spolsky’s building great communities
When a group is its own worst enemy
    Topix.net experience building their forums

  39. Seeing this pop up for the third time in my readers, it finally hit me what I can’t stand about this video - the way the women does not speak up nor does any of the men against making this kind of intimidating sexual dominating behaviour.

It is of course kind of the same for comments, but this is much more intense. It just reminded me how much I am not taking silently and how much obviously is is still in the culture to laugh about this and ‘accept’ this kind of behaviour.

(Interestingly, those men who do these kind of remarks usually are the easiest to intimidate back.) It seems as if it will take a lot more time until we have this kind of behaviour out of our system.

And actually I believe that before that does not happen, the rest will not change either :(

  40. Aggressive men and women who just take it….

Wanna see a reason why women still have no standing in this oh so male world? Then take a look at the video below and look out for “accepted behavior in a community” and try to imagine what kind of implication it has for group dynamics, the behavior …

  41. Ha ha, very good, broadcast isn’t very flowing freely, I think that and should be my network problem.

  42. I am how to appreciate him, oh, too good!Ha ha

  54. The concept is funny, but the execution isn’t. It would have been funner if the actors had played it seriously, but instead they all look like they’re in on the joke, which ruins it. And some of the actors are really unconvincing. Please don’t post anymore videos like this.

  55. [...] Lately I’ve been interested in improving meetings at Clear Ink. I listened to Death By Meeting by Patrick Lencioni, and really liked it. On Crunch Notes today Mike Arrington linked to a College Humor video that demonstrates how a business meeting would go if it were like blog comments. Of course, it’s NSFW. [...]

  56. Well - funny
but its so easy to prepare a clever mechanism.

A simple dividation system needs to be added.

Users with huger opinion > e.g. Zuckerberg, Loic and of course me - will get “premium” accounts.

If we write something - we get listed on the top. The rest is at least something like “you can also read those…” underneath our comments.

Users in a huge position or own company surely beware of writing stupid stuff around…

Idea for wordpress / blogger or selfmade tools for techcrunch.

    Have fun
