As far as I can tell, the only reason behind Dave Winer’s post saying TechMeme is a cesspool is to spam Techmeme itself. And it worked – it is now the top story on the site. I also noticed Dave is using TinyURL to link to blogs that he doesn’t like, obviously to avoid giving them any kind of link juice. Seems kind of petty overall, and the ad hominem attack on Jason Calacanis (calling him an idiot) is just childish.
I know Gabe sometimes edits stuff like this off of TechMeme to keep it stocked with real news. He probably isn’t doing that here since Techmeme is part of the story and he’d be criticized. But here’s one vote to get this kind of nonsense off the site.

Here’s another vote
You know more Techmeme criticism is on the way, but IMO it’s simply the best tech news algorithm out there right now.
Here is one vote for you to spell check your posts.
Childish indeed. Winer should have quit blogging earlier this year, like he said he would. The way he’s going on about Jason is somewhat amusing, yet becoming quite sad as time goes on. Jason has shown himself to be the better man in this case. He’s said his bit. They then parted ways and he’s no longer commenting on anything having to do with Winer. I guess Jason is Winer’s new O’Reilly. Who’s next I wonder. You Mike?
And this is your response to a stupid post which was a response to a bunch of stupid posts which were to climb to the top of some stupid page that you used to be better at getting to the top of which is why you love(d) it so much. Fuck would you all GET OVER YOURSELVES.
Oh, I’m fine with “news” like this. The last thing I “edited off” was the “Ukraine Air Show Disaster” that popped up because Techmeme thought Google Shared Stuff’s home page was an article URL. More on that here:

Diego – me? No, I love Dave. But he always says he calls stuff like he sees it publicly, and has trashed me many a time. So I’m calling this like I see it.
Good God – this blog isn’t really designed to get get lots of link love, I just rant here.
William – go read another blog, get off this one. I put up with that spell check crap on techcrunch because it has a large readership and people deserve clean content. But here? I do what I want.
There’s nothing really good on the leaderboard anyway. Pick a handful of the 100 and you’ll get virtually every story any of them offers. Those sites are all about being a safety net for stuff you might miss out on while you focus on the REAL blogs. Those that are just out of the spotlight. The ones you have to root around and find, that aren’t just aggregating other people’s ideas and spreading gossip:

What will you say when this story is number 1 on TechMeme?
Richard – I’ll just redirect the post to techcrunch if that happens.
OK, maybe not “edited off” but obviously you made the algorithm to make the “best” selections, an extension of your opinion, however beautifully executed.
Seems like ever since Gnomedex Dave takes every chance he gets to attack Jason. Dude needs to move on. Calacanis has.
Excellent points. It’s beneath Dave to be such a … WHiner, though of course Dave is correct that what passes for “news” at Techmeme, let alone Digg, diminishes all of us who suck it up so voraciously.
Next time Dave claims he’s quitting blogging, let’s not talk him out of it, okay?
It’s beneath Dave to be such a … WHiner
Uh, ever since 1995 (and I’m sure before that) Dave’s made a career out of being jealous of other people’s achievements and petty attacks on people he doesn’t like. It’s probably why, despite being a genius, he’s never made any real dough online.
I think everybody forgets how this all looks from people on the outside looking in, which is the entire rest of the industry, really… and that maybe people should feel a little embarassed….
Well I would not have called calacanis and idiot… but he does say idiotic things. But then I only wish I had little boy flippie hair and fifteen million in the bank – so what do I know.
I guess I just don’t get Dave. I love most of what he says about stuff – especially calling the administration on its bullshit and the media on its. But who is calling Dave on his?
Does he really not see that saying “Boo-hoo, the mob or mean people say mean things about me” on day but continuing this silly name-calling and mud-slinging at Calacanis for seemingly no reason other than to be a dick pretty much destroys any credibility he might have on the “people are saying mean things about me” stuff?
Dave’s quick to point out he’s a tough guy from New York, but it seems like what that really means is he’s tough when he’s dishing it out but not really when others do it.
Why not just accept that everybody’s a dick sometimes and let it go?
whiner?
Maybe it’s a bit strange view on journalism, when you have to make the headline in order to become a leader.
